[Video & Photo Blog] Exploring Cheung Chau Island with a Twist

When people talk about visiting the Cheung Chau Island in Hong Kong, people generally think about visiting Pak Tai Temple, having some local street food, dropping in at a pub and chilling out on a beach.

As I was with a bunch of “hardcore” hiking friends, we did things differently and decided to do something chill out on a Saturday. (Hey – the word “hardcore” does not go with “chill out” – oh well, that’s us!)

Sure, we did call in to some local street food stalls, but we also checked out the island and scouted out some potential coasteering routes for the summer.

When we got off the ferry, we headed off to one of the local food stall and had a mango mochi each. A mochi is a glutinous rice pastry that is normally filled with a sweet item inside. In this case, we had a chunk of mango. This is what you would call proper and honest food.

 

Cheung Chau town viewed from the side of the hill. It was a nice stroll up the hill. On Cheung Chau Island, people would rent out some of these houses as holiday places for people who want to stay for a weekend or even longer.

 

We made it to the top of the hill. What a best way to celebrate! We cracked open the wine and shared out the cheese, carrots, humus, fruit kebabs and of course my homemade banana cake! Nice three-course meal 🙂

 

After the food and wine, we had more hikes around the island.  We came across this sign next to a set of railing with some large rocks on the other side. Guess what? We thought that must be the way forward and decided to explore the other side. To be fair, the rules are there to broken, right?

 

Bad boy in action! Does this constitute climbing under the influence of alcohol?! Well, we didn’t know ‘cos we didn’t get breathalysed by the police.

 

So, this was the view on the other side. The weather and water current didn’t look inviting on Saturday. But we thought when summer comes, we will head down to rocks at the bottom and coasteer round the island.

 

Honest, that wasn’t us! We didn’t call out the search and rescue!!! Cheung Chau is a small island and only has a small clinic so any medical emergency requires a helicopter life to a nearest hospital in the city. *Hey, at least the patient gets a free ride on the $5 million chopper. (OK, that’s not the best reasons to get a ride)

 

Apart of the “hardcore” stuff we did, we also visited some temples in town. We were trying to be “normal” for once.

 

Cheung Chau is famous for its white bun with stamped with red Chinese words “peace” on top. This patisserie made white macoroons that imitate the white buns.
